Mindful Mastery & Peak Performance
for High-Stakes Leadership
Rooted in the principles of The Zen Protocol and The Infinite Tao, our workshops integrate modern neuroscience and esoteric mental practices to shatter the rigid patterns that limit human potential.
“Nick manages to make health and fitness like rock n roll—fun and creative. We spent time on what actually produces results, ignoring the hackneyed, old tropes. It's been life-changing.”
- Keith Knight
“Nick hasn’t just researched the habits and methods that prove so effective in living a fully realized life, he lives them. His mentoring has helped me immensely, improving my physical health, mindset and interpersonal relationships. I can’t recommend his tutelage enough.”
- Heath Hawkins
The goal is simple:
Peak performance in all spheres of life.
In today’s fluid and demanding environments, with the rolling waves of AI continually upending the landscape, peak performance requires enormous balance, flexibility, and creativity.
Despite appearances, elite performers aren’t born, they are built.
This is great news.
Humans are incredibly malleable—we just need a blueprint and a guiding hand.
Here’s the dirty secret that most performance coaches don’t reveal: 95% of all transformational efforts fail.
Nutrition.
Emotional regulation.
Business execution.
Only 5% transform and thrive.
Why?
Most performance programs rely on the initial rush of enthusiasm and the sprinkling of a handful of surface level practices atop a lifetime of deeply ingrained thinking patterns and routines. This approach doesn’t work. Like weeds, the deep-seated habits soon re-emerge and reclaim their territory.
So how does one truly transform?
Transformation requries that we flow like water around internal obstacles, never getting stuck.
Yes, transformation is 100% in the mind… of which, most people, despite using their minds every day, know very little.
Robert Kegan, a renowned Harvard psychologist, mapped 5 stages of mental development:
STAGE 1: The Impulsive Mind (Early Childhood)
Young children are their immediate desires or fears. They cannot separate their internal physical/emotional impulses from external reality.
STAGE 2: Instrumental Mind (Adolescence & 2% of Adults)
Relationships are largely transactional, and rules are followed primarily to avoid negative consequences or receive rewards.
STAGE 3: The Socialized Mind (58% of Adults)
For most adults, their identity is determined by the ideas, norms, and expectations of their peer groups. A Stage 3 individual receives their sense of self-worth from external sources: employer, family, political group, or religion. If two of these groups are in conflict, they feel lost because they lack an independent internal compass to resolve the friction.
STAGE 4: The Self-Authoring Mind (35% of Adults)
This smaller group self-defines who they are, sets boundaries, and stands by their own code, regardless of peer pressure or institutional expectations. However, because they are bound to their self-constructed identity (of which they are largely unaware) they often defend their worldview rigidly when it is challenged. Quite simply: they are firm and dependalble, but lack creative flow.
STAGE 5: The Self-Transforming Mind (Less than 5% of Adults)
The few who reach Stage 5 stop viewing the world through rigid binaries (right/wrong, us/them, my way/your way). They recognize that identities and belief systems are fluid constructs.
Instead of defending a fixed position, they hold conflicting perspectives simultaneously and allow their ‘internal self’ to continually evolve—because they recognize that identity is an illusion. This stage is closely aligned with wisdom, humility, and deep empathy.
Digging deep into Kegan’s research on this rare 5%, a striking commonality emerged: a disproportionate number of these individuals cited meditation and martial arts as core tranformational vehicles.
A black belt in jiu jitsu, and a lifelong meditator, on his podcast Nick sat with leading sports psychologists in order to reveal the secrets of peak performance. He also attended a week-long (no phone, ten hours per day) retreat with top-level psychologists at ONSITE in order to unock his personal ability to flow. On top of that, he spent nearly a year traveling throughout Asia, working with masters in Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and India, studying various esoteric mental practices.
The Workshops are grounded in this melding of cutting-edge neuroscience and ancient modalities.
The ability to flow has empowered Nick to transition from inner city reform-school student to licensed attorney with an MBA… to certified general contractor building large developments… actor on a dramatic television series… photographer and published author with a coffee table book published by Random House… black belt world champion… marketing maven for a luxury hotel brand… world traveler… teacher and lecturer.
Obstacles only exist within the distracted mind…
for the disciplined mind, all obstacles are opportunities.
In the Workshops, we progress through three critical phases of transformation, providing the tools required to reach the Stage 5 mountain peak:
1) Focus
2) Vision
3) Story
Such a simple concept.
But so powerful when you consider how much of each day we spend lost in the slipstream of our minds, lurching between the past and the present, between regret and anxieties, between our minds’ fantasies and fears.
Humans experience 40,000+ thoughts per day.
That’s roughly one thought per second.
In The Zen Protocol, I compare the mind to a puppy. Untrained, a puppy runs amok, chasining everything that moves, destorying the house, causing endless chaos. But with consistent training, the dog learns to sit quietly on the curb, watching passerbys on the street without emotional reaction.
This doesn’t mean disconnecting from life.
Quite the opposite.
The disciplined dog joyfully plays when prompted.
As with the street-side phenomena, the constant slipstream of our minds distracts us, distorting our clarity, clouding our experiences, and robbing us of Focus.
Focus is the ultimate Power:
The Power to Perceive.
The Power to Connect.
The Power to Transform.
In the Workshops, we explore the prismatic nature of the Mind, then learn proven techniques to transcend the slipstream and develop laser Focus.
“The Zen Protocol is a driver’s manual for the modern man. Nick captures the essence of martial arts and teaches us to sharpen our inner blades.”
- Mario Guzman
“The Zen Protocol came along at a crucial time, helping me deal with overwhelming stress. The system blends fascinating practices and distills them into simple, transformative steps.”
- Tom Kachnik
“I came to Nick seeking help to stay calm in Jiu Jitsu competitions, but The Zen Protocol philosophy became a personal game-changer. It’s helped me not only in martial arts, but throughout my life, especially in finding calm and being more present in my relationships. Beyond the book, Nick has been a genuine friend and mentor on the path. I am forever grateful.”
- Bob Schoff
The next step is crafting a goal.
This is the easy part.
No goals are too big or too small.
Envision it.
Write it down in detail.
Begin walking the Path toward its achievement.
The problem is rarely the goal, the problem is getting lost along the way.
After the initial enthusiasm wanes, our vision becomes clouded and we lose our bearings.
This is why the Shaolin and samurai not only engaged in rigorous physical drills, but also esoteric practices to continuously clarify their minds and retain a mental state of crystalline clarity, termed emptiness.
Empty of thoughts.
Empty of emotions.
Empty of desires.
Despite the connotations, empty does not mean ‘hollow.’
Emptiness is a state filled with profound bliss and serenity.
This state of our mind impacts every action, every decision, every waking moment of our short lives.
Imagine holding a glass filled with muddy water. Raise the glass near your eyes. It’s impossible to see through clearly. Shadows warp and stretch, offering only a distorted view of reality.
Would you drink this water?
Would you offer it to someone you loved?
Yet, this is what we do when we engage others while our minds are swirling with the dirt particles of thoughts, emotions, worries, and desires.
In the manifest world, the greatest gift we can give ourselves, and give other parched travelers, is a glass of pure water.
Humans subconsciously pickup on energy, communicating primarily through non-verbal cues. There is no way to hide a muddy glass. The only solution is to continually purify our psyches with simple daily practices.
The results are immediate and lifechanging.
Seeing the world through a clear glass grants us incisive vision.
Incisive vision fuels flexibility and focus.
Flexibility and focus fuel peak performance.
In the Workshops, we learn to enter every encouter with intention, clear vision, and a crystalline glass.
Techniques that transform us into disciplined witnesses of both mind and world.
“Calm, clarity, discipline, and focus—qualities I’ve reclaimed thanks to Nick’s thoughtful and empowering program.”
- Judd Zinberg
“Nick’s approach to life and fitness completely changed me, bringing balance, strength, and clarity. The Zen Protocol is more than a set of practices; it's a way of living that has elevated me physically, spiritually, and mentally.”
-Michael Fulbright
“I began the program focused on losing weight and improving my nutrition, but the real journey was emotional—where I learned to manage stress, clarify my intentions, and reconnect with my life’s purpose. Once I explored that part of myself, everything began to flow more freely.”
- Paul Boyajin
More powerful than fission, CRISPR, or Aritificial Intelligence. A technology that enabled our progenitors to crawl from the grassy savannas and construct pyramids to deify kings, forge massive coliseums in which to slay our former beastly tormentors, even launch rockets into space.
The power of Story.
Every moment of the day, our minds chatter away, telling us stories.
Stories of the past.
Stories of the future.
The most impactful story they tell us is The Story of Me.
When we feel stuck, we are not stuck because of bad habits or unhealthy lifestyles. We are stuck because The Story of Me no longer serves our life circumstances and goals.
This is a common occurrence with an ancient solution. Finding ourselves in this predicament, we need only skim the sage musings of every era—The Upanishads, Fusus al-Hikam, Vimalakirti Sutra, the sermons of Meister Eckhart, the Tao Te Ching, Genjōkōan, the talks of noble-prize winning physicist Max Plank, Modern Neuroscience—all proclaiming that the solution lies in the simple question:
WHO AM I?
All point to the fact that the ‘I’ or Identity is nothing more than the fictional and ever-morphing STORY OF ME.
Attachment to this illusion causes immense suffering and impedes progress.
Of course the EGO, which is the encapsulation of the THE STORY OF ME, will reject this notion.
As with every other entity on the planet, the EGO is equipped with self-preservation mechanisms. Thus, it resists examination and any suggestions that it is not real.
Comprehending and integrating this fact is termed Awakening.
A better word: Liberation, as liberation means freedom.
Freedom from the illusory prison of the Ego.
Once we shatter this primary illusion that all other mental illusions rest upon, we are light and nimble, running free in a wide grassy field, unburdened by doubts, regrets and limitations, truly able to achieve peak performance.
NEXT STEP
The Ego is a useful tool for navigating the world. Think of it like an avatar in a video game.
A few important caveats:
Never forget that an avatar is fictional. Nothing more than a superhero suit that we slip in and out of.
As with the beginning of a RPG video game, once we step from our old avatar suit, we should specifically tailor a new avatar suit to achieve the goal that we decided upon during our VISION work. Including such details as dormant abilities, desires, motivations, creative thinking, and beliefs. No more internal blockages, as those burdened the old avatar. No more doubts or awkwardness.
In our ever-changing world, crafting various avatar suits and learning to climb in and out of them up at will, is the most critical skill that we can cultivate.
Most succesful individuals are born with the traits to succeed in a specific career. We judge and revere them in hindsight. Instead, we should revere the statistical probabilities that yielded such an inevitable leader. On the other hand, those who can continously transform and excel in multiple fields are the rare ones (according to the research, less than 5%).
The commonality these Stage 5 innovators share is the ability to shatter the illusion of THE STORY OF ME.
